Children are natural gardeners. They’re curious, like to learn by doing, and love to play in the dirt!

With the help of our children, Chunky Monkeys Day Nursery has grown and will continue to nurture its very own herb, fruit and vegetable Garden. Along with the fun of getting dirty, gardening helps children learn valuable lessons about patience as they wait for vegetables to grow, responsibility as they see how necessary their care is to the garden, and even loss when flowers die at the end of a season. One of the most important aspects of gardening is it enables children to learn about where food comes from. It can also broaden a child’s acceptance of healthy foods – as children are more likely to eat it if they grow it themselves!

There are many crops suitable for the young gardener, here is a selection which are relatively easy to grow, have short growing seasons and are fun to harvest.
